The FBI has acquired a warrant to investigate emails found on the laptop of a former aide to Hillary Clinton, according to multiple reports, as part of its investigation into the Democratic presidential nominee’s use of a private email server.

The move (warrant) came as senior Senate Democrats made an extraordinary attack on the head of the FBI, James Comey, on Sunday over the new investigation, with Senate minority leader Harry Reid warning he may have broken the law.

In a scathing letter, Reid wrote: “Your actions in recent months have demonstrated a disturbing double standard for the treatment of sensitive information, with what appears to be a clear intent to aid one political party over another. “My office has determined that these actions may violate the Hatch Act, which bars FBI officials from using their official authority to influence an election. Through your partisan action, you may have broken the law.”

The Hatch Act limits the political activity of federal employees, for instance barring them from seeking public office or using their authority “or influence to interfere with or affect the result of an election”. The former attorney general Eric Holder joined dozens of former federal prosecutors in signing a letter critical of Comey. The letter obtained Sunday by the Associated Press said Comey broke from justice department policy when he alerted Congress to the new discovery of emails potentially related to the Clinton email investigation.

That policy is meant to prevent the appearance of prosecutors affecting the electoral process. The former prosecutors said in the letter that Comey’s disclosure had “invited considerable, uninformed public speculation” about the significance of the emails. In a brief letter to congressional leaders on Friday, 11 days before the election, Comey said he did not yet know whether the newly discovered emails were pertinent or significant. The Trump campaign, trailing in national polls, seized on the news, which the candidate himself said was indicative of a scandal “bigger than Watergate”. On Sunday, Reid went on, without citing evidence, to accuse Comey of withholding information about the FBI’s investigation into hacks on Democratic organizations, allegedly by Russian security services, and possible links with various former advisers to Donald Trump.

In August, Reid wrote to Comey to express concern over alleged links between Trump associates, Russian sources and the hacks. “There is no danger to American interests from releasing it,” Reid said. “And yet, you continue to resist calls to inform the public of this critical information. “By contrast, as soon as you came into possession of the slightest innuendo related to Secretary Clinton, you rushed to publicize it in the most negative light possible.” Four other senior Senate Democrats – Dianne Feinstein, Patrick Leahy, Ben Cardin and Thomas Carper – have written to Comey since he announced the review, demanding a full briefing on the new emails by Monday.

Abuja – Super Falcon’s Media Officer, Remi Sulola, on Monday debunked claims that the team threatened to boycott the forthcoming 2016 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) over unpaid bonuses and allowances. Sulola said in Abuja that recent media report that the team threatened to boycott the event was false

The report had stated that the players were protesting against non-payment of their bonuses and allowances by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after their qualifying matches, especially the encounter with Teranga Lionesses of Senegal in April. According to the report, the NFF had cited financial challenges as the reason for the delay in the payment. Sulola confirmed that the players had not been paid some allowances but said that they were training hard for the competition. “It is true that they are being owed, but the NFF had promised them that their money will be paid before the tournament begins.

“It is false and untrue for anyone to say that they had threatened to boycott the event or their trainings. “Money is actually the last thing on the players mind right now, because they are focused on defending and returning home with the trophy. “Most of the home-based players who are invited to camp did not participate in the qualifiers; those who were fully involved are the foreign-based, whom we are still expecting,” she said. Nigeria is in Group B with arch-rivals Ghana, Mali and Kenya in the tournament. The 10th AWCON is billed for Cameroon from Nov. 19 to Dec. 3.

Abakaliki – Football fans in Ebonyi have advised the Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, to field Victor Moses in the right wing-back position during the forthcoming Russia 2018 qualifier against Algeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Moses continued his rich form in that position during Chelsea’s EPL match against Southampton on Sunday under its new 3-5-2 tactical formation.

Moses in the first half provided the assistance for Belgian Eden Hazard to score the first goal before Diego Costa’s sublime finish in the second half earned Chelsea a 2-0 win.

The fans told NAN on Monday in Abakaliki that Moses’ rich form should be effectively utilised to disorganise the North African team’s fluid pattern of play.

Edmund Ndukamma, a former Rangers International FC of Enugu defender, remarked that fielding Moses in that position would immensely benefit the Eagles against Algeria.

“Moses will help the Eagles’ attack pile pressure on the Algerian defence from the right wing thereby disorganising their quick-pass movements from its lethal left-wing.

“He will also assist the Nigerian right full back which was problematic against Zambia in the team’s first qualifier in Ndola,’’ he said.

Nicodemus Omenka, former Ebonyi Commissioner for Youths and Sports, corroborated Ndukamma’s claim, noting that Moses would play a vital role in the Algerian match.

“He is one of Nigeria’s hottest players in Europe currently and his presence would psychologically affect the Algerians who are also grappling with their coaching problems.

“His blistering runs from the right wing will give Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi more room to operate, while also assisting the defenders to curtail the Algerians’ incursions,’’ he said.

Jude Nlemchi, Colombia FC of Abakaliki player, advised Rohr to place emphasis on current form in selecting players to be fielded against the Algerians.

“Players such as Moses, Iwobi, Iheanacho among others should be fielded against Algeria as the system worked against Zambia in Ndola.

“The Algerians play a `fast-paced’ style and the Eagles need fit, aggressive and skilful players to disorganise their strategy for the much needed win,’’ he said.

Chief Silas Mgbebu, a businessman and soccer enthusiast, urged the Eagles to approach the Algerian match with serious determination as if they were playing in a cup final.

“The players should replicate the level of commitment for their clubs in the Algerian match to ensure the team achieves the much needed victory.

“Winning the match will make them the `group of death’ leaders before qualification hostilities resumes in 2017 with the accompanying psychological edge over their opponents,’’ he said.

Mrs Scholastica Igwe, a civil servant and soccer admirer, warned that the euphoria of the Algerian match if not properly handled, might affect the Eagles.

“The only sporting news on the airwaves currently is the match with Algeria and the euphoria should not be allowed to pile undue pressure on the players and officials,’’ she said.

Lagos – A trekker, Muhammed Isa, 32, has once again embarked on a walk from Lagos to Abuja in solidarity with the Ali-Modu Sheriff’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction.

Isa, who started the walk from Berger footbridge along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, told newsmen before departing at about 9.12 a.m. that youths of the party support Sheriff as the Chairman.

“I am on solidarity trek from Lagos to Abuja to show my support and the support of youths to Sheriff as the authentic national Chairman of PDP,’’ he said. The internal leadership squabbles had factionalised PDP with Alhaji Ahmed Markafi leading the other. Isa, a graduate of Psychology, claimed that the youth felt that Sheriff was the best person to manage the affairs of the party. “I want to make something clear, Ali-Modu Sheriff is someone who is honest and listens to grassroots politicians; he has been working tirelessly to ensure that PDP regains its lost glory.trekking “This is the type of person we need as a leader to move the party forward,’’ he said. The indigene of Borno said he hoped to finish the trek within 23 days.

“I have already planned my journey, I will be trekking from morning to evening, wherever dusk meets me, I look for an accommodation there. “After morning prayers, I will resume trekking,’’ he said. Asked about the security measures he has in place, Isa said he had none but believed God was with him. “I believe with Allah on my side, no evil will befall me because I am not doing something that is bad or injurious to the country,’’ he said. NAN reports that Isa also trekked when former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, conceded defeat on March 28, 2015 President Muhammadu Buhari. Then, he trekked from the same Berger area of Lagos to Abuja with the reason that Jonathan made a great sacrifice for the unity of the country.

“The fact that I am a Muslim does not mean that I should not celebrate Jonathan for the sacrifice he made for this country by accepting defeat.’’ Isa, who expressed optimism that he would meet the President and present him an award then, however, said that “if I did not see him, I don’t care. “If I die on the road, I still believe that I die for what is right,’’ he said during the trek that beganonMay6.
